1985: On 1 June 1985 Auto & General Insurance was launched in the South African market. As a timeline reference, elsewhere in the world in 1985, Mike Tyson made his professional debut, the Nintendo Game Consol and Tetris was launched and the first British cellphone call was made

1993: The Group entered the UK market

1997: The Group entered the Australian market

1998: Auto & General’s holding company, Telesure Investment Holdings (Telesure), is created to house the South African interests of the Guernsey-based Budget Holdings Ltd

1998: Budget Insurance Brokers South Africa is launched

2003: Sister company Dial Direct, an offshoot of Dial Direct in the UK, is launched in South Africa

2004: 1st for Women Insurance Brokers, the country’s first female-focused insurer, is launched

2005: Unity Insurance is launched.

2006: 1Lifedirect, South Africa’s first truly direct life insurance provider is launched

2007: hippo.co.za - South Africa’s first insurance internet aggregator site is launched

2007: Prosper; a product of Unity Insurance is launched

2008: Dial Direct is named the most popular short-term insurance brand in South Africa in the 2008 Sunday Times Business Times/ Ipsos Markinor Brand Survey

2009: Affinity partnership with Insurance driven by the AA is established

2009: ibuyeco, an environmentally-friendly insurance product is launched

2009: Telesure is voted the second best company to work for in the Deloitte Best Company to Work for Survey

2010: Affinity partnership with Virgin Money’s Insurance like it should be is established

2010: 1st for Women is voted as the top insurance brand in the Sunday Times Top Brand survey

2011: Virseker, an insurance product for South Africa’s Afrikaans speaking community is launched

2011: Auto & General wins the coveted Isabel Jones Ukusizana Award from the Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance
