POTHOLES: DENTS, SCRATCHES, TYRES AND RIMS – WHAT NOW?

Friday, April 25, 2014

South Africans, especially Gauteng residents, have experienced unseasonably high rainfall this year, and what followed has been well documented: washed away roads, bridges and dreaded potholes. According to a study done by the South African Road Federation, “potholes are costing motorists R50 billion in vehicle repairs and injury every year”. *

According to www.hippo.co.za, a financial services price comparison and features site for SA insurers and brands, dents and scratch cover insures the repair of small dents, chips and scratches in the event of accidental damage to the body of your vehicle.

When it comes to tyres and rims, “You are covered against paying out of your own pocket to repair or replace your damaged tyres and rims”, says Carl Louw, Chief Marketing Officer for www.hippo.co.za Louw suggests that consumers should check out the terms and conditions of their policy because different insurers make different decisions on how often you can claim, or if they will replace or repair the damage.

If you are one of the affected motorists, now is the time to check your insurance to see if it covers tyre and rim damage caused by worsening roads. “You don’t need an existing car insurance policy to take out this cover, it is a stand-alone,” says Louw, “This applies to dent and scratch cover too.”
